London Shootfighters entered a team into the Urban Gorillaz grappling competition, the largest of its kind in Europe (and organised exceptionally well by Jude Samuel of Gracie Barra), which took place May 7th at ‘Seni’ the martial arts expo at the Birmingham NEC. The tournament used ADCC rules, now the benchmark for submission wrestling, and although London Shootfighters is predominantly a mixed martial arts fight team it prides itself on competing, and excelling, in related sports.

Teams throughout Europe competed, some participants hailed as far a field as Brazil and the USA. The London Shootfighters team performed brilliantly – taking a wide range of medals from different weight classes and levels of experience, showcasing not only their more experienced competitors but also their novice team.Alberto Mina The Beginners medal haul is an excellent indication of the effect of having a full time gym on its members and shows how well some of the competitors did after such a short time of training. EXPECT THE NEW BLOOD OF LONDON SHOOTFIGHTERS TO CONTINUE TO MAKE A BIG IMPACT IN TIME TO COME.

Special congratulation goes to Alberto Mina who not only took the gold medal in the advanced under 77kg weight division but also won the advanced “absolute” division where athletes of all different weights, some considerably heavier than Alberto, participated. Overall, the entire team put on an excellent performance with some outstanding grappling skills on display from many of the teams at the tournament, and although obviously there were those who didn’t take medals, coaches Paul, Alexis and Marios felt great pride in their team. The Medal winners were as follows:

  • Alberto Mina – 77kg advanced Gold & Absolute advanced Gold
  • Kathy Gifford Women’s division – 60kg Gold & Women’s division +60kg Silver
  • Ollie Dew – 66kgintermediate Silver
  • Michael Szwede – 77kg novice Gold
  • Giorgio Andrews – 66kg novice Gold
  • Jamil Sorouji – 88kg novice Bronze
